Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare
SMP Aftercare: The Key to Long-Lasting Results
Getting SMP isn't just about what happens in the chair — Scalp Micropigmentation aftercare is just as important. How you care for your scalp before and after treatment plays a significant role in how well it heals and how natural your results look over time.
At Hairline Solutions, we want you to feel confident every step of the way. That's why we've created a simple, no-fuss Micropigmentation aftercare guide — perfect for busy people who want great results with minimal downtime.
One of the most common questions we hear is: "How long does SMP take to heal?"
After each session, your SMP healing process should be your top priority. Although this phase is short, it's essential — it's the foundation for achieving a flawless, long-lasting finish. Below, we'll walk you through exactly what to do (and what to avoid) after your SMP treatment to ensure the best possible outcome.
Micropigmentation Aftercare do's and don'ts.
Days 1–4
- Keep your head/scalp dry. No washing, shampooing, or products on the scalp during this period.
- No heavy sweating. Light exercise or physical labour is fine, but anything that involves heavy sweating must be avoided to let the pigment settle.
- Avoid direct sun and heat (wear a loose hat outdoors).
- No swimming, spas, or saunas.
- Don't rub, pick or scratch at the scalp, even if it feels itchy.
- Avoid tight hats, helmets, or beanies.
- No shaving with a razor — leave it alone.
Days 5–7
- Gently wash your scalp with warm water or mild baby shampoo.
- Start applying a light, water-based moisturiser (depending on skin type).
- Still no swimming, spas, or saunas.
- At this point, you can usually return to shaving with a razor (if that's your usual look).
Days 14 onwards
- Back to normal routine.

Long-Term Care: Protecting Your SMP
SMP is designed to last, but the way you look after it will make all the difference to how it holds up over time. These are our recommendations for maintaining SMP results in the long term.
- Protect SMP from sun fading – Sunscreen or a hat is non-negotiable, as UV exposure will definitely fade pigment. Always use scalp protection when outdoors and exposed to the sun.
- Moisturising after SMP – Hydrated skin is healthy skin and will keep your treatment looking fresh.
- Exfoliate now and then – if you shave your scalp, a light exfoliation twice a month helps prevent dead skin build-up and helps your moisturiser hydrate the skin.
- What skincare to avoid after SMP: avoid harsh products. Anything high in alcohol or strong acids (like AHA) will fade your pigment faster.
- Chlorine, saltwater, and steam – an occasional dip is fine, but prolonged, regular exposure will likely shorten your SMP's lifespan, so touch-ups are due a little sooner.
Uncomplicated SMP Aftercare
In the first two weeks, it's all about keeping your scalp clean, dry, and protected. After that, it's simple long-term habits: sunscreen, moisture, and avoiding things that fade pigment.
Follow these steps and you'll get the most natural, lasting result — so every time you look in the mirror, you'll see a finish you're proud of.
Scalp Micropigmentation Aftercare FAQs
How long is the downtime after SMP?
Most people are surprised by how little downtime there is. You can go straight back to work the same day — just no sweating, washing, or sun exposure for the first 4 days.
When can I wash my head/scalp after SMP?
You'll need to wait 3-4 days before getting your scalp wet. From day 5, you can gently wash with baby shampoo or a gentle, chemical-free cleanser.
Can I wear a hat after scalp micropigmentation?
Yes — but stick to loose-fitting hats for the first few days so you don't rub against the treated area. Avoid tight caps, helmets, or beanies until after day 5.
